Before you apply: read the advertisement twice
More applications are rejected on process than on merit. The advertisement is a contract — it states the route, the fee, the closing date and the documents, and a scrutiny committee applies it literally.
Check three things first: the last date, the age limit as it stands on that date, and where the application goes — the department, a testing service, or the public service commission. Sending it to the wrong place is fatal and no one will telephone you about it.
The document set
Keep a permanent folder with attested copies of: CNIC, matric certificate, intermediate certificate, degree and transcripts, domicile, experience letters and recent passport-size photographs. Attestation must be by a Grade-17 officer or above unless the notice names someone else.
Never send originals. Scrutiny committees do not return documents, and replacing a degree takes months.
Paying the fee
Most advertisements require a bank challan generated from the testing service or commission portal. Print it, pay at a designated branch, and keep the candidate copy — you will need it on test day and it is the only proof your application was paid for.
Pay only through the route named in the advertisement. Nobody legitimate will ask for cash, a mobile wallet transfer, or a payment to an individual’s account.
After you apply
Roll number slips are issued online, usually a week before the test. Check the portal rather than waiting for post or SMS — slips are frequently issued without any notification at all.
Merit lists are published on the same portal. If a list omits you in error, there is normally a short representation window stated alongside it; miss that and the list stands.
The five most common reasons applications fail
- Application reached after the last date — posting it on the last date is not enough.
- Age limit crossed, calculated on the closing date rather than the test date.
- Documents unattested, or attested by someone below the required grade.
- Fee paid but the challan copy not attached.
- Applied to the department when the advertisement named a commission or testing service.
Common questions
Can I apply for more than one government post at a time?
Yes, but each post normally needs its own application and its own fee. Commissions publish a separate advertisement number for each.
Is the application fee refundable?
No. Fees are not refunded, including when you are not shortlisted or the recruitment is later cancelled.
How long does government recruitment take?
From advertisement to appointment letter is commonly six to twelve months, longer where a written examination and an interview stage are both involved.
