Government and private CVs are not the same document
A government application is judged against a prescribed form and a checklist; the CV is supporting paper. A private employer reads the CV first and often reads nothing else. Writing one document for both is why so many applications land badly.
The structure that works
Header: name, city, one phone number, one professional email address, CNIC where a form requires it.
Objective: two lines, naming the post you are applying for. Delete it if it is generic.
Education: newest first, with year, institution, board or university, and marks or CGPA — Pakistani scrutiny committees look for the numbers.
Experience: newest first, with dates, employer and what you actually did. Two or three lines each, verbs first.
Skills and certificates: concrete ones only — typing speed, a licence class, a software name, a registration number.
References: two, with designation and contact, or the line “available on request”.
Length, photograph and file format
One page for a fresh graduate, two at most for experienced candidates. A photograph is expected on government applications and optional in the private sector — if you include one, use a plain background.
Send a PDF unless the advertisement demands otherwise. A Word file reformats itself on someone else’s machine and a rearranged CV reads as carelessness.
Mistakes that cost interviews
- An email address you made at fifteen.
- Marks left off, when the committee is scoring academic record.
- Gaps left unexplained — a line stating what you did is better than a silent year.
- The same CV sent to every post, with no reference to the advertised role.
- Spelling errors in your own degree title.

Should I put my photograph on a CV in Pakistan?
On government applications, yes — most prescribed forms require one. In the private sector it is optional and makes no difference to shortlisting.
How long should a CV be?
One page if you are a fresh graduate, two pages if you have several years of relevant experience. Longer CVs are skimmed, not read.
Do I need a covering letter?
For private applications, a short one helps. For government applications, follow the prescribed form — an unrequested letter adds nothing.
